Why Produce Womenswear in Türkiye? Benefits and Trade-Offs

Custom womenswear production for global brands and retailers: what makes Türkiye attractive, and the trade-offs a careful buyer should weigh.

Choosing where to produce is one of the biggest decisions a fashion business makes. Türkiye appears on many shortlists, especially for brands selling in the UK and Germany. This article explains why, and is honest about the trade-offs, because a good sourcing decision weighs both sides.

A long textile and garment tradition

Türkiye has a long history in textiles and clothing, and its industry covers much of the chain: fabrics, trims, cutting, sewing, finishing and packing. For a brand working from its own designs, this depth matters. Questions about fabric, construction or finishing can often be answered by people working close to one another, which shortens feedback loops.

Proximity to your market

Geography is a practical advantage. Goods travel to the UK and Germany over shorter routes than from distant production regions. For buyers, shorter routes can mean more flexible planning and less stock committed far in advance. Exact transit and production times depend on the project, so we avoid generic promises; ask for specifics once your brief is clear.

Flexibility for brands that work from their own designs

Many Turkish factories are accustomed to working with international buyers on custom designs. At Weftport, production is custom and based on your own design. Projects start from 500 pieces and there is no upper limit, so a young label and a larger retailer can both be served. Our partner factory in Istanbul was founded in 2009, has about 80 team members and produces about 70 percent womenswear, 20 percent menswear and 10 percent kidswear, woven and knitted. Denim is not part of the range.

Quality you can inspect

A factory is only as good as its checks. Our partner factory inspects fabric on arrival, sets defective fabric aside before cutting, and runs laboratory testing, appearance after wash, dimensional stability, colour and rubbing fastness tests and a 90 N test for buttons and snaps. A showroom with a fabric library and a colour light box supports development. You can read more on the quality page.

The trade-offs to weigh

A balanced view includes the downsides.

  • Costs. Production in Türkiye is not always the cheapest option compared with some other regions. Compare total landed cost, not only the unit price.
  • Fabric sourcing. Some specialised fabrics may need to be imported, which affects cost and timing.
  • Currency and market changes. Prices can be affected by exchange rates and economic conditions. Discuss how a quotation handles this.
  • Compliance. Labelling, safety and customs rules for your market remain your responsibility.
  • Distance still exists. Visits and sample shipping take planning.

When Türkiye fits best

Türkiye tends to suit brands that value responsiveness, work with their own designs, want production close to Europe and prefer a structured process with clear communication. It may fit less well if your only criterion is the lowest unit price or if you need denim.

How to evaluate it for your brand

Send the same brief to a few potential partners, including one in Türkiye, and compare the answers on specification, communication and clarity as well as price. Our guide to sourcing womenswear lists what to check.

Questions to ask before choosing any country

Whatever region you consider, ask the same questions. How does the supplier handle specification and changes? How is incoming fabric inspected? What is the process for samples and approvals? How is colour controlled? What is included in the quotation and what is not? How will you communicate, in which language and with whom? Write the answers down and compare them across suppliers. A sourcing decision based on documented answers is far more defensible than one based on impressions, and it gives you a baseline to measure the first delivery against.

A practical first step

If Türkiye looks promising, start small in scope but not in preparation. Choose a few styles, prepare a clear brief and plan time for at least one sample round. Treat the first order as a test of communication as much as of product. If it goes well, you have a proven specification and a working relationship to build on.
